1870年、英国公使館護衛隊歩兵大隊・軍楽隊長ジョン・ウィリアム・フェントン（アイルランド、コーク州キンセール出身）の作曲による。しかし、1876年（明治9年）に海軍音楽長である中村祐庸が「天皇陛下ヲ祝スル楽譜改訂之儀」を提出。現在の君が代は1880年に誕生した。 フェントンが明治2年（1869）に横浜妙香寺において薩摩藩士に吹奏楽を指導したこの地で毎年フェントン作曲の君が代が演奏される。 演奏 横浜市消防音楽隊 John William Fenton was an Irish musician of Scottish descent and the leader of a military band in Japan at 1870’s. This music was only the first version of Japanese anthem, Kimi ga Yo. Fenton’s version is performed annually at the Myōkōji Temple in Yokohama. This temple is near where Fenton was based as a military band leader in early Meiji era.
